For families in Northern Ireland, the SEAG Transfer Test is the route to a grammar school place — and the process around it generates a great deal more anxiety than it needs to. I work online with P6 and P7 families across Northern Ireland, preparing children for the assessment and helping parents make sense of what the outcomes actually mean for the schools they're considering.

I spent seven years as a headteacher before moving into tutoring, and most of that time was spent with children preparing for selective entry and with their parents in the months either side. That's the perspective I bring: what selective schools look for, how standardised assessments work, and what genuinely moves a child's score as opposed to what simply fills their weekends.

The SEAG assessment is set and marked by GL Assessment. Understanding its format matters — the two-paper structure, the separate answer sheet, the balance of multiple choice and free response — but format knowledge is the easy part. The harder work is accuracy under time pressure and a child who doesn't unravel when they meet a question they can't do.
