Send me one timed piece of creative writing. I'll mark it personally and tell you, clearly and kindly, where your child stands and what to work on next.

1. Book online. As soon as you've paid, the writing task arrives by email for you to print at home.

2. Your child writes for 30 minutes. Please keep to exam conditions: no help and no dictionary. I need to see what they can do on the day.

3. Send back a photo or scan via email to enquiries@davidbelleducation.co.uk

What you'll receive

A written report [2–3 pages] covering:

• How the piece compares with what selective and independent schools expect

• What your child already does well

• Three priorities for improvement, in order

• Comments on the work itself

• Practical exercises to try at home

Why parents ask me

I've spent over 20 years in education, seven of them as a headteacher, and I know what schools look for in a child's writing. I mark every assessment myself: not a team, and not software.

My feedback is honest but encouraging. Children improve fastest when they know exactly what to do next, without being made to feel anxious about it.

Which exams include creative writing?

Many 11+ and independent school entrance exams include a timed writing task. It's often the part children find hardest to practise alone, because they can't mark it themselves.

I regularly prepare pupils for the ISEB, Quest, CAT4, Cambridge Select Examinations alongside creative writing using my MAGIC PENS! approach.
